Extreme Weather Policy

At London Pet Care, your pet's wellbeing and safety are our top priorities. With this in mind, we take all necessary measures to ensure your dog remains safe, happy and comfortable.

Hot Weather Policy

Hot weather, particularly during summer, can pose serious health risks to dogs, including heatstroke and burnt paw pads. To minimise these risks, we adapt our services as follows:

1. Walk Timing Adjustments

  • Walks will be scheduled for cooler parts of the day, such as early mornings or evenings.

  • Midday walks may be shortened or replaced with indoor enrichment activities to avoid peak heat.

2. Safety Measures During Walks

  • Walks will take place in shaded areas whenever possible.

  • Dogs will be monitored closely for signs of overheating, including excessive panting, drooling, or lethargy.

3. High-Risk Breeds

  • Brachycephalic dogs (e.g., pugs, bulldogs) or those with thick coats (e.g., huskies, retrievers) are especially vulnerable to heat. We may recommend alternative activities for these breeds during hot weather.

4. Paw Protection

  • Pavement temperatures can become dangerously hot. We will test surfaces with the “five-second rule” (if it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for paws) and avoid paved areas when necessary.

Cold Weather Policy

Cold weather, snow, and ice can be uncomfortable and dangerous for dogs. Here’s how we handle dog walking in colder conditions:

1. Protective Measures

  • Dogs may be given appropriate protective gear, such as coats or paw balms, to keep them warm and prevent frostbite.

  • We avoid salted or gritted paths that can irritate paws, and paws will be wiped clean after walks.

2. Walk Duration Adjustments

  • Walks may be shortened to prevent prolonged exposure to freezing temperatures.

3. Special Considerations

  • Puppies, senior dogs, and smaller breeds are more sensitive to the cold and may require alternative arrangements, such as indoor play or shorter walks.

Rain and Storm Policy

Heavy rain and storms can make outdoor walks unsafe or unpleasant for dogs. During such conditions, we adjust our approach as follows:

1. Indoor Activities

  • If walking conditions are deemed unsafe, we’ll provide enrichment activities indoors to keep your dog mentally stimulated and engaged.

  • Activities may include puzzle toys, scent games, or basic training exercises.

2. Safety First

  • We will avoid areas prone to flooding or slippery surfaces during heavy rain.

Communication During Extreme Weather

In cases of extreme weather:

1. Notifying You of Changes

  • We will inform you as soon as possible if walks need to be rescheduled, shortened, or replaced with alternative activities.

  • Updates will be provided via WhatsApp, text message, or email, based on your preferred method of communication.

2. Client Flexibility

  • We ask for your understanding and flexibility during these times. Your dog’s safety will always come first.

Client Responsibilities

To help us provide the best care for your dog during extreme weather, we kindly ask that you:

1. Prepare Your Home

  • Ensure safe and accessible entry to your property during adverse conditions, such as clearing snow or securing gates.

2. Provide Necessary Gear

  • Supply any protective clothing or equipment your dog may require, such as coats, boots, or paw balms.

3. Update Contact Information

  • Ensure we have up-to-date emergency contact details and instructions for handling your dog during extreme weather.

Refunds and Cancellations

1. Extreme Weather Refunds

  • If we cannot provide a walk due to unsafe weather conditions and an alternative arrangement cannot be agreed upon, a full refund or credit will be offered.

2. Client Cancellations

  • In line with our Cancellation Policy, cancellations due to extreme weather must be made with at least 24 hours notice in order for clients to be eligible for a refund.
